BLADE READER LEARNING SERVICES Power through accuracy in reading and writing.
Blade Reader Learning Services offers expert, small-group, supplemental instruction for struggling students K-12 and adults living in underserved areas of New York City. Blade Reader's courses are in reading/writing/spelling (taught together) and in other school subjects and study skills. Our mission is to empower individuals through accuracy in reading and writing - one key to a free and expressive society. Blade Reader's remedial and enrichment courses are taught using the Orton-Gillingham approach, based on the neurological research begun by Dr. Samuel T. Orton in the 1930s. This structured, sequential, cumulative approach teaches all aspects of our language in a way that is emotionally sound and success-oriented for all students. Its "multisensory" techniques combine seeing, hearing, touch and muscle-use simultaneously for successful learning. The principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach are now recognized as basic to effective teaching. Blade Reader services are brought to the community through the sponsorship of community and non-profit organizations and charter schools. We provide courses within school or in after-school programs.

ORTON-GILLINGHAM The Orton-Gillingham approach to learning integrates the pioneering works of Dr. Samuel T. Orton, a neuropsychiatrist who studied the brain patterns in dyslexic individuals, Anna Gillingham, educational psychologist, and Dr. Maria Montessori, physician and educator who emphasized sensory learning techniques. The core methods of the approach are used in all effective literacy programs for new and struggling readers. The principles of the O-G Approach are: * teaching reading through writing, handwriting and spelling * using “multisensory” techniques (simultaneous seeing, hearing, feeling) * simple to complex, regular to irregular * structured, individualized learning * teaching language structure, rules and regularities explicitly * expanding vocabulary throughout Individuals instructed using this approach experience improved self-esteem as a result of the progress they make. We teach reading for accuracy and fluency, which results in better comprehension. We teach spelling, handwriting and writing skills for better written expression.
